Savings Seen From Right to Counsel in Eviction Cases

Guaranteeing right to counsel for low-income tenants facing eviction would save New York City $320 million annually by reducing shelter costs and preserving affordable housing, according to a study commissioned by the New York City Bar Association’s Pro Bono and Legal Services Committee….’This study confirms that providing a right to counsel in eviction cases is not only the right thing to do, but the smart and responsible thing to do,’ said Debra Raskin, president of the city bar, in a news release.
