NYC Bar Association makes plea to Chief Judge DiFiore over ICE arrests in the courts

“As the office of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) continues to make arrests in courthouses in Brooklyn and New York City, the New York City Bar Association (NYCBA) has issued a report that makes recommendations that it would like to see Chief Judge Janet DiFiore enact. While the NYCBA acknowledges the position the Office of Court Administration is in, as well as directives issued by ICE in January, it states that the current policy is creating a justice system not accessible by immigrants, documented or otherwise….’While there is not one state court system in the country, including New York State, that solely recognizes judicial warrants for arrests in their facilities, we will, however, review this report and give their recommendations due consideration,’ an OCA spokesperson told the Brooklyn Eagle. ‘Our policies regarding court operations are always open to revision should we feel that in doing so we will make them more accessible to the public and efficiently run.’”
