DOJ Official Cites BNP As Example Of How Not To Cooperate
The head of the Justice Department’s criminal division on Tuesday laid out what the government expects of companies that seek to cooperate with criminal investigations, citing the conduct of BNP Paribas SA during an economic sanctions investigation that cost the lender $9 billion as a model to avoid. Speaking to a crowd of attorneys at the New York City Bar’s fourth annual White Collar Crime Institute in Manhattan, Assistant Attorney General Leslie R. Caldwell said if companies are looking to assist prosecutors when wrongdoing is discovered, and get full credit for it, they can’t engage in half measures.
