Dignity for All Students Act
After consistently passing in the Assembly by wide margins every year since 2002, the Dignity for All Students Act ("DASA", A.3661-C/S.1987-B) passed the Senate by a bipartisan vote of 58-3 on June 22, 2010. DASA would amend the New York Education Law to require the Commissioner of Education to establish policies and procedures to afford all students in public schools an environment free of harassment and discrimination. Instances of harrasment, discrimination and bullying create a hostile environment in schools that prevents students from flourishing and reaching their full academic and social potential. DASA would require that schools have mechanisms in place to both prevent and combat bullying. Having cleared the Senate, the bill, which passed the Assembly in May, awaits delivery to the Governor for his action. The City Bar urges Governor Paterson to support this important legislation.
