Labor and Employment Law Committee

The Labor and Employment Law Committee addresses the multitude of laws governing employee-employer, union-management, and union-employee relationships including federal, state and local non-discrimination laws, wage and hour laws, the National Labor Relations Act, leave laws such as the Family and Medical Leave Act, among many others.

Recent topics addressed by the Committee include equal employment rights for LGBT individuals, employer background checks and barriers to employment of ex-offenders, non-compete agreements and law, employee privacy rights and employer restrictions on employee use of social media, ethics in employment law, the impact of the new healthcare law on employers and employees, the impact of recent U.S. Supreme Court decisions on class action and mandatory arbitration in employment, and recent NLRB challenges to social media policies, mediation best practices and increasing diversity of arbitrators. Among their many projects, committee members organize and sponsor between 10 and 20 seminars per year, have proposed and successfully lobbied for passage of new laws impacting the workplace, written reports and letters in support or against proposed federal, state and local laws, prepared guides for use by pro se litigants and mediators in the federal courts. The committee also hosts speakers.
