Workers’ Compensation Lawyers
If you are injured on the job, you may choose to hire a lawyer to help you with your case and to make sure you are awarded proper benefits. A workers’ compensation lawyer can help you file a claim, answer your questions, and represent you at the Workers’ Compensation Board. There are often disputes in workers’ compensation cases about what injuries were work-related, the level of disability, the amount of benefits, and whether medical treatment is needed. If the Workers’ Compensation Board schedules a hearing, the insurance company will be represented by a lawyer and the Board will assign a judge to hold the hearing and decide the case.
A workers’ compensation lawyer is not permitted to charge a fee or to accept money from you. If the Workers’ Compensation Board finds that you are entitled to more money than the insurance company paid voluntarily, then it may award a fee to your lawyer. The amount of the fee will be set by the judge (although the lawyer may make a request), and it will be deducted from your compensation checks by the insurance company. The insurance company will then send payment to the lawyer.
