Bioethical Issues Committee

The Bioethical Issues Committee examines the intersection of law and ethics surrounding medicine, health, and the social determinants of health. The Committee considers legal implications of medical advances, like Neuralink and normothermic regional perfusion (NRP). It also analyze the personal implications of changes to laws surrounding advance directives, medical aid in dying, abortion access, and mental health care. Recent reports cover ethical breaches in organ transplant, including organ sales and forced organ harvesting; and medical fraud, exploitation, and crimes against women held in ICE detention. Other issues the Committee addresses include fairness in health care, access to health care, the social determinants of health, medicalization, the right to refuse care, wellness in aging, maternal mortality, and the legal disposition of advance directives in New York.
