POSITION REPORTS TO: Executive Director
The City Bar Justice Center (CBJC) seeks a dynamic attorney to join as Pro Bono Manager. The CBJC matches over 1,100 pro bono volunteers annually and assists more than 20,000 New Yorkers with legal advice, brief services, community training and extended representation. The Pro Bono Manger will coordinate with law firm attorneys and pro bono managers, in-house counsel, and CBJC staff, to efficiently match low income clients seeking pro bono legal assistance. The Pro Bono Manager understands access to justice issues for low-income New Yorkers and effectively organizes volunteers to fill the justice gap.
The position is part of the small administrative team at the City Bar Justice Center reporting to the Executive Director. The Pro Bono Manager will work with the CBJC’s Project Directors to strategically recruit, engage and track law firms and in-house legal departments’ pro bono activity as well as individual City Bar members, law interns, pro bono scholars, summer interns, interpreters and other volunteers who support the CBJC’s programs. The CBJC has a staff of about 30 with each project directed by an attorney with deep expertise in their field. The Pro Bono Manager will market CBJC’s volunteer opportunities to maximize engagement by law firms, in-house counsel and members. The Pro Bono Manager also oversees volunteer recognition activities including the annual Epstein Awards for Outstanding Pro Bono Service.
This position will meet regularly with the CBJC Project Directors and occasionally with City Bar Committee Chairs and others seeking to create limited scope volunteer opportunities for low income and disadvantaged client populations and will supervise the legal work of volunteers at days of service and other limited scope service clinics. The Pro Bono Manager will also lead the CBJC’s involvement in disaster relief legal services when the CBJC is involved. The Pro Bono Manager will contribute articles on pro bono developments quarterly to social media channels and will co-manage the NYC Pro Bono website on ProBonoNet.
Candidate must be a member of the New York State Bar in good standing with at least five years of experience. Previous experience in a New York large law firm setting or an in-house corporate practice is preferred. Commitment to pro bono and serving low-income and disadvantaged communities is required.
SKILLS & REQUIREMENTS
Excellent oral and written communications skills, transparent and team player with ability to keep a group updated on a range of activities, excellent project management and training skills, courteous and organized, experience marketing through media and social media. Flexible hours with some evening work required. Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel). Ability to use data visualization to enhance reporting. Use of LegalServer database for managing contacts is required. Spanish language skills a plus. Salary and benefits are competitive for New York public interest law offices.
