Strategies to Promote Human Rights through Regional Human Rights Systems
in Arusha, Tanzania, from March 30 to April 2. >>>
Meeting on the
Implementation of the Pro Bono Declaration for the Americas held in Peru
The Vance Center co-convened,
along with Fundacion Pro Bono in Chile and Ciudadanos al Dia in Peru, a
roundtable on pro bono on June 10 in Lima, Peru. The Roundtable provided
partners at Peruvian law firms that have signed the Pro Bono Declaration
for the Americas with the opportunity to discuss ways of
institutionalizing pro bono within law firms and creating the structures
necessary to ensure that access-to-justice projects become available to
lawyers at these firms.

Vance Center Fosters
Dialogue on Institutionalization of Pro Bono in Law Firms
Pro bono counsels and coordinators, partners and associates of law
firms in the U.S. and Argentina participated in a videoconference,
co-organized by the Vance Center and Comision de Trabajo Pro bono e
Interes Publico, on June 26 to exchange ideas on best strategies to
support and effectively manage pro bono work at their firms.

Vance Center Clearinghouse
Case on Gender-Based Discrimination Receives Settlement
On March 11, the Inter-American
Commission on Human Rights approved an agreement for a friendly settlement
between the State of Chile and Marcela Andrea Valdes, in Valdes v.
Chile. This case raised important issues regarding the development of
anti-discrimination and domestic violence law in the Americas. In the
settlement, the state offered special redress and compensations to the
petitioner, Mrs. Valdes, and also pledged to revise and strengthen the
nation’s laws and regulations on domestic violence.

Conservancy Provide Legal Assistance to Chilean Private Land Conservation
Working Group
On
Thursday, May 1, 2008, The Vance Center
and The Nature Conservancy
co-hosted a working session and a reception for the Private
Land Conservation Working Group from Chile, which was visiting New York
City and Boston to learn more about the U.S. experience in private land
conservation.
