The Visiting Lawyer Program seeks to address the continuing effects of apartheid on the South African legal profession by bringing young lawyers from historically disadvantaged backgrounds to New York City for an intensive, one-year fellowship at city law firms and corporate legal departments. Fellows gain exposure to sophisticated financial and corporate transactions and access to an international network of practitioners, enhancing their ability to assume leadership roles in South Africa's economy.

To date, the Vance Center has brought nineteen lawyers to New York. Returned alumni are making partner at their firms and are beginning to form an alumni network which will support the continuing development and expansion of the program.
