Regional conference on access to
justice and pro bono
São Paulo, Brazil

The third of a series of conferences on
pro bono and access to justice took place in São Paulo, Brazil in December 2003. The Vance Center collaborated in the planning of the São Paulo Conference with Instituto Pro Bono. The Conference focused on the continuing expansion of pro bono in the southern hemisphere and the need to develop pro bono within the context of the State's obligation to provide access to justice. The two-day event drew together 200 lawyers, law professors, NGO leaders, prominent members of bar associations and the judiciary from Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Mexico, the United States, Hungary, South Africa and Turkey. Mexico, Peru and Colombia have been identified as host countries for future conferences.
