In April 2000 the New York City Bar hosted a conference on
the international crisis in access to justice, which brought together
lawyers from 20 countries to share strategies for addressing this problem of
global proportion. The gathering, "Partnerships Across Borders", was the
beginning of an informal network that has generated a pro bono initiative,
which is expanding throughout Latin America.
The conference also led the City Bar to establish the Cyrus
R. Vance Center for International Justice Initiatives in 2003 to formalize
its commitment to collaboration on these issues of critical importance to
the legal profession throughout the world.
