There are a number of public service opportunities
in the international field for senior lawyers. Some positions are pro
bono, and many are with compensation. Opportunities may be in the fields
of conflict resolution, civil society development, human rights and
international education. The following are some of the organizations
offering access to these opportunities.
LWOB Lawyers without Borders
LWOB is the world’s largest organization of volunteer lawyers
committed to providing pro bono services to Rule of Law initiatives,
Human Rights work, and non-governmental organizations from around
the world.
Roger Pugh, an active member and past Chair of the Senior Lawyers
Committee, serves on LWOB’s Board of Directors and as its Chief
Liaison to the United Nations. He has done personally rewarding volunteer
work this year with LWOB. Numerous volunteer opportunities, both
international and domestic, exist, i.e. addressing lawyer problems
in turmoil regions, mentoring lawyers in developing nations, pro
bono work with Internationally oriented NGO’s (non-profits)
and contribution to Court capacity building initiatives in regions
emerging from conflict.

ISLP International Senior Lawyers Project
The mission of the International Senior Lawyers Project
is to provide a vehicle through which the growing number of skilled
and experienced senior attorneys at or near retirement can provide
volunteer legal services to the world community. Through the provision
of pro bono legal assistance to governments, international charitable
organizations, local nonprofit organizations, law schools and indigenous
legal assistance providers, ISLP seeks to advance democracy and the
rule of law, protect human rights and promote equitable economic opportunities
by helping communities and nations implement legal reforms, assisting
programs that advance the social and economic well-being of disadvantaged
people and building the capacity of local organizations and professionals
to meet the needs of their communities.
ISLP is supported by a grant from the Public Welfare
Foundation and from contributions from law firms and lawyers.
