THE HISTORY OF THE REHNQUIST COURT

When: Thursday, Jan. 19, 2006; 6 to 8 p.m.
Where: New York City Bar Association, 42 West 44th Street

The passing of Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist ends the nearly 20-year stewardship of the high court by this Nixon and Reagan appointee. How does the Rehnquist Court compare with previous courts? What will be the Rehnquist Court’s principal legacy? The new federalism? The narrowing of habeas corpus? The treatment of the abortion issue? And, how does Chief Justice Rehnquist compare with previous Chief Justices? What will be his principal legacy after 33 years on the Court, where he evolved from the lone dissenter to the center of its conservative core?
