The passing of Chief Justice
William H. Rehnquist ends the nearly 20-year
stewardship of the high court by this Nixon
and Reagan appointee. How does the Rehnquist
Court compare with previous courts? What will
be the Rehnquist Court’s principal legacy?
The new federalism? The narrowing of habeas
corpus? The treatment of the abortion issue?
And, how does Chief Justice Rehnquist compare
with previous Chief Justices? What will be
his principal legacy after 33 years on the
Court, where he evolved from the lone dissenter
to the center of its conservative core?
