Programs and Services for Members
Career Coaching/Counseling
Members can request a session with a career counselor at a significantly reduced rate. All counselors have a minimum of three years experience in the legal profession.
Young Lawyers Connect
Monthly social events for young attorneys (admitted 8 years or less) that also offer an opportunity to expand professional contacts and to network. City Bar members of Young Lawyers Connect receive a monthly e-newsletter and can join the City Bar Facebook and LinkedIn groups.
Professional Development Workshop Series
Annual series of workshops, led by leading consultants and experts and provides mid-level associates with the skills necessary to be successful in their careers. Topics typically include: managing your career, client relationships, leadership skills, delegation, communication and presentation skill, and business development.
Transition/ Re-Entry
Throughout the year the City Bar offers programs for attorneys seeking transition inside or outside the profession or to re-enter the profession. Programs include such topics as: résumé writing, career evaluation, the interview process, how to network, financial planning and information on alternative legal careers.
Lawyer Assistance Program
Free, confidential service for NYC members and their families, who are struggling with alcohol or drug abuse or mental health issues. The confidential hotline 212-302-5787, is available 24/7.
Pro Bono Opportunities
Volunteer with the City Bar Justice Center and keep active by assisting New York’s underserved. Attorneys may earn one CLE credit for every six hours of eligible pro bono legal service (a maximum of six pro bono CLE credits per reporting cycle).
Small Law Firm Center
The Center offers free conference room and private workspace to any City Bar member from a small law firm and one-on-one brainstorming sessions with Center’s Director are available to members who are interested in starting their small law firm practice or have law practice management questions about their existing small firm practice.
The Center also offers networking groups and program throughout the year on such topics as: stress management, effective marketing, growing your practice and effective technology.
CLE Courses
City Bar members receive up to 35% discount providing the opportunity to keep current or get informed about new practice areas, and financial scholarships and additional discounts are available.
Library
Free access to Lexis, Westlaw and HeinOnline is available for members doing research in the Library. In addition, the library offers many free online data bases including legal forms. Many of these data bases can be accessed from home or office.
Legal Referral Service
Apply to join the City Bar’s Legal Referral Service Panel, the largest lawyer referral service in the United States. The LRS approval process is a serious one. This allows us to confidently recommend lawyers to the public. It also makes it more likely that the lawyers we recommend will be retained. Application procedures for the Panel are available on line.
Website Resources
The Your Career section of the City Bar website hosts many articles on timely career-related topics as well as a directory of resources and profiles of attorneys with various and interesting career paths. Members also have access to the Vault online Career Library which offers free career guides and resources for lawyers and law students. Some of the features include: Legal Career Center enables you to post your résumé or search job openings; Ask the Experts allows you to submit questions anonymously which are answered by the Committee on Career Advancement and Management; Discussion Forums to post a topic or see what others are saying; and Career Development Podcasts of past programs.
In addition members have access to the Members Only Online Directory to connect with 23,000 members.
