LRS Celebrates National Law Day

LRS continually strives to serve the public in exciting and innovative ways. A few of our current programs include the following:
  • Monday Night Law Clinic: This free clinic runs from October through July. It is scheduled on specific nights throughout each month. At the clinic, attorneys will meet with clients for one-half hour appointments to discuss a variety of legal topics, such as bankruptcy, consumer issues, matrimonial, basic employment and landlord-tenant. There is no charge for this service. A client must schedule an appointment for the Monday Night Clinic through the LRS hotline (212) 626-7373 (English), (212) 626-7374 (Spanish). Walk-ins are not permitted.
  • SHIELD Hotline: The SHIELD (Self-Help Information, Education and Legal Defense) hotline is a free advice hotline sponsored by the Bar Association for income-qualified callers. A phone call to the hotline connects you with a staff of knowledgeable referral counselors, who are attorneys and paralegals. SHIELD counselors will give free legal advice on a wide range of subjects, such as family law, immigration, bankruptcy, employment and landlord-tenant issues. SHIELD counselors are available to answer questions Monday through Friday from 9:00 A.M. to 12:30 P.M.. To speak with a SHIELD counselor, call (212) 626-7383.

  • The SHIELD program also conducts a free Pro Se Uncontested Divorce Clinic. "Pro Se" means that a person is going to represent him or herself in a legal proceeding; he or she is not going to be represented by a lawyer. "Uncontested" means that both parties want to obtain a divorce, and there are no unresolved issues between the parties, such as child custody, spousal support, or property issues. The Uncontested Divorce Clinic consists of a series of two or three classes in which clients are taught how to fill out and file the appropriate divorce papers. A client must schedule an appointment for the SHIELD Divorce Clinic through the SHIELD hotline. Walk-ins are not permitted.

  • Brown Bag Law Lunch: The Legal Referral Service sponsors a speakers bureau called Brown Bag Law. Through this program, your office, community group, school, or organization can schedule a skilled attorney to give a free presentation on any area of law you may wish. Each presentation is followed by a question and answer session, and the entire program can be completed in one hour. Brown Bag Law is a public service; attorney speakers will not solicit business from workshop attendees. Our enjoyable, innovative presentations are designed to answer basic questions about topics ranging from "When and How to Hire a Lawyer" to "Estate Planning" to "The ABC's of Buying a House/Coop/Condo." Legal Referral Service is happy to tailor a speaking engagement to suit your needs, and we look forward to having an opportunity to visit with your group or organization. For more information or to schedule a guest speaker, please contact Allen Charne.

  • Legal Information Services: LRS houses a large variety of informational pamphlets and brochures for public distribution. Some topics include: "Avoiding Grief with a Lawyer," "Building a Better Credit Record," "Finding the Best Mortgage," "You and Your Lawyer," and "New Car Lemon Law." To request brochures and information simply call the LRS hotline at (212) 626-7373 or e-mail us at acharne@nycbar.org .
We will mail you information free of charge.
