The New York City Bar plays a leading role in championing issues for the betterment of the City and its legal community. Our origins are traced to 1870 when a group of lawyers fought to rid the courts, and City Hall, of corruption. Since its founding, the City Bar has expanded to a membership of over 23,000 and evolved to keep pace with the ever-changing legal community, while remaining true to its founding principles. In addition to the hundreds of events held at the City Bar, we host the annual Professional Development Workshop Series. From January –June, members can attend these workshops that focus on topics like leadership, communication, time-management, and client developments. There is no charge for members to attend, and most workshops provide CLE credit. We also hold programs for attorneys seeking to re-enter or transition within the profession. In addition, we have Young Lawyers Connect, a series of 10 monthly social events, monthly e-newsletter and other online features.

Whether you are just starting out, or well into your career, the Committee on Career Advancement and Management produces programs to assist you with your career development needs.

Members can use our recently launched Career Counselor Referral Program to be referred an experienced career counselor, for an initial session, at a discounted member rate.

The City Bar offers 150 live CLE courses annually with member discounts of up to 35% off regular prices. Programs range from 1-1/12 hours to full day, along with online programs, tapes, DVD’s, CD’s, books and podcasts. In addition:

Individual Passports are available whereby essentially for the price of 5 programs or products you receive a 6th one free.
A 20% discount is offered if 4 or more attorneys from the same firm attend a program.

Special discounts for members who practice at firms with fewer than 10 attorneys:

DVDs can be viewed in the library for 50% off the cost of a live program. Attorneys would need to pre-register at least one day in advance to view the DVD.

The City Bar’s LRS is the largest lawyer referral and information service in the United States. You can help us serve callers who require legal advice and representation, while we help you grow your business by referring new clients. Membership is open to lawyers who actively practice in New York, meet experience and expertise requirements and agree to the rules of the Service.

Our Small Law Firm Center is a resource for our members who are solo practitioners or in small law firms. We recognize the challenges you face, so we created this center to offer benefits specifically for the Small Law Firm Attorney.

Free Midtown Workspace and Conference Room
The City Bar offers a free conference room and workspace to any City Bar member from a small law firm. The conference room seats up to eight people and a speakerphone is available with 24 hours notice. The workspace is a fully equipped office and includes a computer with Internet access, copier/printer/fax and telephone.

Association members may reserve the conference room or the workspace at the Small Law Firm Center free of charge for up to two-hours at a time, by calling the library reference desk at 212-382-6666. Both rooms are available Monday through Thursday, 9:00 a.m. - 8:30 p.m. and Friday 9:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.

New York lawyers faced with ethical questions regarding their own prospective conduct can reach the Ethics Hotline at 212.382.6624. Operated by the Committee on Professional and Judicial Ethics, the hotline is staffed by committee members who can often answer the inquiry promptly over the phone. Otherwise, a timely written response is sent to the caller. The Committee also publishes written opinions on ethical issues of broad interest.

This is a FREE, CONFIDENTIAL service, available to attorneys, judges, law students and their family members, in New York City, who are struggling with alcohol or drug abuse, depression, anxiety and stress, as well as other addictions and mental health issues. LAP’s confidential hotline is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week: 212.302.5787.

Expand your professional networks by applying to join one of the City Bar’s 160 committees. Whether it is writing reports on current legislation, hosting CLE programs and events or filing amicus briefs in ground-breaking legal cases, our committees shape policy and frame debate on the pressing legal issues of the day.

The City Bar Justice Center provides an opportunity for attorneys and paralegals to assist New York’s most underserved individuals through our various pro bono legal projects. Attorneys may earn one CLE credit for every six hours of eligible pro bono legal service (but not more than 6 pro bono CLE credits per two-year reporting cycle).

Corporate meeting space is available for rent in our landmark building on West 44th Street (between Fifth and Sixth Avenues). Members receive special discounted rates. Meet a client, host a professional luncheon or reception, or hold a big family event in our elegant, gracious building.

Our Library, the largest private law library in the United States, is free to members, has computers available with word processing, spreadsheet capabilities, and Internet, and has wireless internet. The Stetson Room at Saint Luke’s Hospital
Extract from the will of the Late Francis Lynde Stetson“I give the sum of twenty-five thousand dollars ($25,000) to St. Luke’s Hospital upon condition that all times and perpetually it shall maintain one free room called the Stetson Room, and therein shall furnish free treatment** for one member of the Bar Association aforesaid to be nominated from time to time by the President of the Association for the time being.”Accepted by Saint Luke’s Hospital, January 30, 1922Members only have access to the Stetson Room at Saint Luke’s Hospital. Members wishing to avail themselves of this privilege should apply by letter to the President of the Association. The letter should give the name and address of the member’s doctor; the nature of the illness; and the expected duration of the stay in the hospital.** Doctor’ fees and private duty nurses’ fees are not included. The fund will be used to pay hospital costs only in excess of the patient’s medical insurance, including Medicare.
