Over the last several years, the IRS and Department of Justice have been extraordinarily successful in obtaining information about taxpayers’ previously undisclosed foreign accounts. As of the date of this announcement, we are in the midst of the third offshore voluntary disclosure program since 2009. Kathryn Keneally, Assistant Attorney General, Tax Department, United States Department of Justice, will describe the key developments leading to the Government’s enforcement successes thus far, and continuing efforts to combat offshore tax evasion. Scott D. Michel, a partner in Caplin & Drysdale, will discuss the options available to taxpayers with undisclosed foreign accounts, including key advantages and disadvantages of participating in the 2012 Offshore Voluntary Disclosure Program.
