The New Poor: New Debates About The Culture of Poverty and Their Implications For Poverty Policies
Wednesday, January 26, 2011 6:30-8:00pm

Registration for this event is now closed

What role do stereotypes, stigma, and old notions of the “culture of poverty,” play in shaping current safety net policies? What advocacy strategies are being used to protect the social safety net for those most in need?

The New Poor will explore these important questions in light of recent Census Bureau statistics showing both an increase in poverty and a marked shift away from “traditional” populations of poor. The panel discussion will explore why, as poverty is increasing to historical levels and safety net policies are becoming most necessary, those policies are being slowly whittled away, and what, as advocates, we can do to curb this trend.
