Practicing in the African and Inter American Regional Human Rights Systems: Training and Opportunities for US Lawyers

The program will provide participants with an introduction to those human rights systems and information about how to get involved by acting as co-counsel, submitting amicus briefs or conducting international legal research. The Vance Center is organizing the events in conjunction with the Asociacion por los Derechos Civiles (ADC), Buenos Aires, Argentina; the Center for Justice and International Law (CEJIL), Washington, DC; and the Committee on African Affairs, the Committee on International Human Rights, and the Committee on Inter-American Affairs of the New York City Bar Association.

The program features a distinguished list of speakers, panelists and moderators. Participating from the Americas are: Fernando Basch, ADC, Argentina; Caroline Bettinger-Lopez, Deputy Director and Lecturer-in-Law, Human Rights Institute and Clinic, Columbia Law School; James Cavallaro, Clinical Professor of Law and Executive Director, Human Rights Program, Harvard Law School; Viviana Krsticevic, Executive Director, CEJIL; Lawrence Lee, Cohen & Gresser, LLP; Claudia Martin, Professorial Lecturer-in-Residence and Co-Director, Academy on Human Rights and Humanitarian Law, American University Washington College of Law; and Juan Pablo Olmedo, President, Council for Transparency in Chile. Participating from Africa are: Sheila Keetharuth, Executive Director, Institute for Human Rights and Development in Gambia; and George Kegoro, Executive Director, International Commission of Jurists, Kenya Section.

This program is part of the Vance Center's efforts to strengthen the support of human rights protections in Africa and Latin America through the pro bono work of U.S. attorneys. In conjunction with the training programs, the Vance Center will be expanding the human rights referrals available through its global pro bono Clearinghouse.

The program is free, and 3 CLE credits will be provided. The program itself will be 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm, with a reception to follow.
