Lawyer Assistance Program

Provides information, advice and assistance to members of the profession regarding problems of alcohol and substance abuse. Upon request of the Departmental Disciplinary Committee, members of the committee monitor individual lawyers with alcohol or drug dependency problems.

Lawyers Orchestra
(Special Committee)
Entertains at functions within and outside the Association. The only requirement is the ability to play an instrument.

Legal Education and Admission to the Bar

Addresses issues regarding bar exams and admission to practice, as well as matters relating to legal education and the functioning of law schools.

Legal Referral Service
(Joint Committee)
A joint committee of the Association and the New York County Lawyers’ Association which manages the affairs of the Legal Referral Service, (212) 626-7373. LRS. responds to over 110,000 calls each year for assistance in finding attorneys. Its panel members are screened by staff and leaders in the practice area, and monitored by the staff and the Committee. Malpractice insurance is required to be a panel member. Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Rights

Established by the Association in 1870, the Library Committee sets policy regarding the Association’s collection development, including electronic sources and services, book preservation, the physical facilities of the Library, the information services available and the delivery of quality service to members of the Association.

Conducts a program providing summer jobs for inner-city high school students with law firms and other law-related employers.

Product Liability

Focuses on legal and policy issues in the field of product liability law.

Professional and Judicial Ethics
(Standing Committee)
Issues opinions regarding the application of the Lawyers Code of Professional Responsibility and the Canons of Judicial Ethics to the conduct of lawyers and judges; sponsors a hotline for lawyers to call for ethical advice with regard to their own prospective conduct.

Professional Discipline
(Standing Committee)
Studies and monitors the role and function of the lawyer discipline process. It operates the Complaint Mediation Panel, which mediates lawyer/client disputes (other than fee disputes) referred by the Departmental Disciplinary Committee.

Professional Responsibility
(Standing Committee)
Addresses a broad range of issues relating to the practice of law and the responsibilities of lawyers, and makes recommendations regarding proposed changes in ethical codes.

Project Finance
(Standing Committee)
Addresses issues relating to the financing of complex transactions, with a focus on the multi-national nature of this area of practice.

Project on the Homeless
(Ad Hoc Committee)
Addresses issues relating to homelessness and focuses on implementation of strategies to prevent and alleviate the problem. It works closely with the Association’s Community Outreach Law Program to support the Program’s legal clinics for the homeless.

Addresses issues concerning real property law. The Committee publishes a regular newsletter (Metes and Bounds) which serves the needs of a broad range of real estate practitioners.

Recruitment and Retention of Lawyers

Addresses issues and policies concerning law firm recruitment and retention. The Committee organizes the Association’s Fellowship Program, which matches minority law students with law firms for summer employment after the first year of law school, and sponsors an annual luncheon for recruitment coordinators at law firms and law schools.

Focuses on the interactions and relationships between science, technology and legal issues

Securities Litigation
