Statement of City Bar President Carey R. Dunne on the 50-Hour Pro Bono Requirement

The New York City Bar Association fully supports the new Pro Bono Requirement for Bar Admission that was announced yesterday.  The Rule reflects the flexibility and logistical factors that we emphasized in comments we issued last May.  The Requirement should foster broader pro bono interest and activity at the law school level and generate a wide range of additional legal assistance to those most in need.  We appreciate the January 1, 2015, implementation date, as it will provide time for law schools, bar associations, legal services providers and others with an interest in promoting this form of public service to devise ways for law students to perform these services effectively.  The New York City Bar Association stands ready to do its share in support of this effort.
