Carey R. Dunne Nominated to be New York City Bar Association President

Carey R. Dunne has been nominated as President of the New York City Bar Association. If elected, Dunne will succeed Samuel W. Seymour as the 65th president in the Association’s 141-year history. The election will take place at the City Bar’s annual meeting on May 15, 2012. The City Bar also announced its slate of officers and members of its Executive and Audit Committees.

Dunne is a partner at Davis Polk & Wardwell LLP, where he leads the litigation practice and is a member of the firm’s three-person Management Committee. He has represented clients in a wide variety of high-profile criminal, civil and regulatory matters, including grand jury inquiries, internal investigations, enforcement actions by state and federal agencies, and complex commercial disputes. He also has extensive experience advising companies, boards and audit committees on compliance and corporate governance issues. Dunne’s recent work has included assignments in China, Korea, Pakistan, Indonesia, the Philippines, the Dominican Republic, Italy and the United Kingdom.

Dunne was a prosecutor in the office of Manhattan District Attorney Robert Morgenthau from 1984 through 1987. He served on former Chief Judge Judith Kaye’s Commission on the Future of Indigent Defense Services, and in 2006 was chosen by Judge Kaye to chair her statewide Special Commission on the Future of the New York State Courts. He was a Director and Chair of the Task Force on Judicial Selection for the Fund for Modern Courts, and a Director and Member of the Executive Committee of The Legal Aid Society. In 2008, Dunne was presented by the Fund for Modern Courts with the John J. McCloy Award for outstanding contributions to the administration of justice in New York State.

Dunne’s pro bono work includes a recent jury verdict of acquittal in the murder trial of Lonnie Jones, clearing him of all charges and securing his release from prison, where he had been wrongly held for over five years.

At the City Bar, Dunne has been a member for nearly 25 years, and has served as a Vice President, a member of the Executive Committee, and as Chair of the Judiciary Committee.

“It is a tremendous privilege to receive this nomination,” said Dunne. “The City Bar has since 1870 been one of our nation’s most effective and relevant legal institutions, serving the interests of justice and the legal community. We as lawyers have an obligation to uphold and promote the highest values of our profession, and there is no better place to do that than the New York City Bar Association.”
