Statement by City Bar President Samuel W. Seymour on Awarding of Nobel Peace Prize to Liu Xiaobo

The New York City Bar Association’s recent mission to China  included an extensive meeting with the lawyers who have worked to protect Liu Xiaobo over the years. We hope the awarding of the 2010 Nobel Peace prize to Liu Xiaobo will focus attention on human rights concerns in China, including the dangers lawyers face in representing dissidents in China. There are lawyers in China who risk threats, harassment, loss of their livelihood, detention and worse, and yet continue to provide representation to dissidents, as well as to children, migrant workers and others seeking to assert their rights.
